Maura Verleg’s overtime goal propels No. 9 Maryland field hockey to 4-3 victory against No. 17 Princeton

With 2:22 left in the first overtime, the Terps earned a penalty corner. Midfielder Emma DeBerdine struck the ball, just the initial shot was blocked. The Terps then regained control and defender Maura Verleg sent the ball into the net for the game winning goal.
"It was so much fun," Verleg said. "Likewise, Emma [DeBerdine] had a neat assist, and then we all worked hard for it."
No. 9 Maryland field hockey (5-two, 0-one B1G) outlasted No. 17 Princeton (2-4) in overtime to win 4-3.
"The squad today was just so vigilant," caput coach Missy Meharg said.
Later the opening 12 minutes lacked any considerable activity the following 7 minutes featured iv goals combined.
With ii:45 left in the outset quarter, the Terps earned two penalty corners in a row. On their 2nd penalization corner, forward Hope Rose's shot was blocked by the Tigers goalie Robyn Thompson merely the rebound bounced in front of forward Bibi Donraadt who tapped the brawl into the empty left side of the net to requite the Terps a 1-0.
Seconds after, Princeton drove the ball downwards the field and earned their own penalty corner. Terps goalie Noelle Frost saved Hannah Davey's shot only the rebound landed in front of Tigers defender Claire Donovan.
The Terps wasted little time taking dorsum the lead. Forward Margot Lawn received the ball to showtime the 2nd quarter and raced up the left side. Lawn establish midfielder Emma DeBerdine in the circumvolve and Lawn sent the ball across to her. Emma DeBerdine sent the ball into the net.
Most v minutes later, Princeton responded when Tigers midfielder Beth Yeager sent the ball to forward Grace Schulze who scored to tie the game back upwardly at 2-2.
In the tertiary quarter, the Tigers earned their 3rd penalization corner of the game. Tigers frontwards Bridget Murphy'southward shot was blocked but Yeager deflected the ball into the net to give the Tigers their showtime atomic number 82 of the game.
In the final frame, Christiana Calandra replaced Frost and had a disquisitional slap save to keep the Terps arrears at one. Once the game reached overtime, Frost returned to the friction match.
"When you get to October and November y'all have to have 2 goalies that everyone believes in," Meharg said.
With four:51 left in regulation, midfielder Brooke DeBerdine sent the ball beyond the circle. The ball snuck in the far post to tie the game back upwards at 3-3.
"I'thou glad I could serve the squad and make a goal at that time, it felt a picayune weird, but I'll accept it," Brooke DeBerdine said.
Brooke DeBerdine's goal is only the fourth collegiate goal of her career.
Emma DeBerdine picked upward a yellow card with less than 2 minutes to go in regulation and had to sit down out the outset 3:30 of overtime.
Right before Emma DeBerdine'south penalty expired, Donraadt appeared to have scored her 2nd overtime goal of the season, simply the refs reviewed the telephone call and noticed the brawl hit Donraadt'southward arm, and so the goal was overturned.
